Barinder (Tony) Athwal, MD
Dr. Barinder “Tony” Athwal attended McGill Universiry in Canada and received his medical degree from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a three-year Ophthalmology residency in 1986 at UMDNJ- New Jersey Medical School, where he had the distinction of being appointed the Chief Resident. In 1986, he started his private practice in Toms River.
He also teaches as a clinical instructor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School’s Department of Ophthalmology and is on the medical staff at Community Medical Center, Toms River, New Jersey. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Athwal serves on the board of the Ocean Eye Surgery Center and ClearVision Laser Center, and is a member of the New Jersey Academy of Opthalmology, the New Jersey Medical Society, the Ocean County Medical Society, the American Academy of Opthalmology, and the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.
Harjit (Harry) Athwal, MD
Dr. Harjit “Harry” Athwal attended Cook College at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and graduated with a medical degree from Rutgers Medical School. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a three-year Ophthalmology residency in 1990 at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Louisiana, where he did a fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery. He joined his brother in private practice in 1991.
Dr. Athwal is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, Medical Society of New Jersey, Ocean County Medical Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also serves on the board of the iMedicware – an electronic medical records company.
Lisa M. Athwal, MD
Dr. Lisa M. Athwal is a graduate of New Jersey Medical School, located in Newark. She was raised in Toms River, and is excited to join her father, Barinder Athwal, MD and uncle, Harjit Athwal, MD in practice. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Opthalmology and her areas of interest include management of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, dry eye, and cataracts.
Dr. Athwal completed her residency in ophthalmology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. During her training, she rotated at the University Hospital in Newark, the East Orange VA Hospital, and Jersey City Medical Center. The experience allowed her to treat a diverse group of patients with a wide range of eye pathologies. Her surgical experience includes cataract and glaucoma surgeries, retinal and glaucoma lasers, and injections for macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, in addition to corneal and oculoplastic procedures.
During her training, Dr. Lisa M. Athwal presented ophthalmology research projects at national meetings and coauthored a research paper on pediatric infectious endophtalmitis. She also participated in local and international volunteer work to provide free eye exams to patients in need. Now that she has returned to her hometown, she hopes to make a positive contribution to the community she loves.
Neal Athwal, OD
Dr. Neal Athwal graduated from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, and he is excited to now be starting his career alongside his family at Athwal Eye Associates. Dr. Athwal attended Lehigh University as an undergrad where he earned a bachelors degree in Psychology. He believes that majoring in Psychology continues to help him today as a healthcare provider in everyday patient interaction, allowing him to better understand each patient’s needs and concerns, and to offer the best, most appropriate care.
During his year of clinical rotations at the New England College of Optometry, Dr. Athwal was fortunate enough to work with many of his professors, all of who were great clinicians and many of who were specialists within the field of optometry. Thus Dr. Athwal spent much time not only learning and practicing general optometry, but also working in low vision, contact lens, and vision therapy clinics. Furthermore, Dr. Athwal was fortunate enough to spend a semester working at the Low Vision clinic at Perkins School for the Blind where he got hands on experience working with children with multiple disabilities, as well as vision loss. All of these clinical experiences have served to make Dr. Athwal a well-rounded doctor capable of performing specialty contact lens, low vision, and pediatric exams, as well as fulfilling any routine eye care needs for patients of all ages.
Donald MacDonald, MD
Dr. Donald MacDonald is a board certified ophthalmologist who sub-specializes in oculoplastic and reconstructive eye surgery. He was raised in Monmouth County and, after attending Forrestdale, he spent four years at Portsmouth Abbey, a theocentric school which molded his entire future.
He then graduated from Williams College with Highest Honors in Chemistry, and his enchantment with New England then led him to Dartmouth Medical School.
He chose to do his residency in NY in ophthalmology at Cornell and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital. During his residency he was captivated with plastic and reconstructive surgery and decided to specialize in these areas. He completed Fellowships in Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery from both the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital.
In 2000, Dr. MacDonald also founded the Clearsight Laser Center in Tinton Falls. This center is dedicated to refractive surgery, mainly LASIK and PRK, and CK utilizing the state of the art technology with the WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser technology.
Dr. Laurel Feiner, MD
Dr. Laurel Feiner, MD received her BA in biology from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and received her medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY.
Postgraduate medical training consisted of an internship at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch NJ, an ophthalmology residency at Penn State University / Hershey Medical Center and a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota.
Her areas of interest include vision loss, double vision and multiple sclerosis, brain tumor and stroke in relation to the visual system.
Dr. Feiner is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology
